48 Hour Film Project

for the Portland 48 Hour Film project this year.  I worked with Opera Theatre Oregon and a team called “Opera Cinema Strike Force”.  They commissioned an original opera for their film.  The catch, the film has to be finished in 48 hours and given that the actors work with the score on the set, the soundtrack has to be finished in about 12 hours.   That gave me about 6 hours (between midnight and 6AM) to write the orchestral score before the musicians show up to record it in the morning.

We had a fantastic orchestra this year led by conductor Erica Melton and concertmaster Lucia Conrad.  With over 35 players and singers, we put together a great soundtrack and had a CD in hand for the score 12 hours after the first note hit the paper at midnight.

The film with my score premieres at the Hollywood Theatre on Wednesday the 11th at 7 pm.  I’ll post it here eventually as well.  It was a fun project and the largest ensemble I’ve even written for.  Thanks to everyone involved!!

Megafauna at the Sapphire Hotel in Portland

BarFly’s Review of Sapphire Hotel

An air of romance pervades the Sapphire, with its above-bar bedroom diorama, artful assortment 45-10 menu, of antiques, small zigzag bar, and a cozy wood stove anchoring a charming conversation area. Expensive eyewear crowd canoodles quietly over well-crafted cocktails ($5 premium well), and small plates. Sidewalk seating available, given the weather. Live jazz and acoustic acts booked sporadically.

Jazz Quartet plays Eastburn

Megafauna is playing at EastBurn on the 22nd. A personal favorite hangout, I recommend checking it out. There’s no cover and the set goes 10pm – midnight.  Come listen to some original jazz and partake of the highly above average tap selection over there.

From Barfly Magazine -
Housed in the former Nocturnal space, East Burn comprises two levels: a restaurant upstairs and a casual bar downstairs.
Where else in Portland can you play 25-cent Skee Ball or race electric cars for free with a cocktail in hand? Please let us know. The patio here trumps almost all smoking patios with overhead heaters, swinging chairs and mini fire pits built into the tables. Bartender Tristin makes a mean Manhattan, which is fantastic as they are heavily discounted on Wednesdays.
